So back in 1988 I worked on the concept sketch designs for a James Cameron movie called The Abyss. I worked off the script and didn't really know who was starring in the film.
Once again, I was inspired by Saul Bass and created some imagery that might evoke a certain 2D feel...yes, the profiles of the male/female are obvious....but they also give the viewer a sense of the rock formations at the bottom of the ocean...to create tension of claustrophobia in the deep darkness of the ocean...the fear of tight spaces as in the relationship between the male and female stars. In my initial sketch I had a figure swimming between the two faces to create more of a friction..almost being trapped under water.
It's a fine line to walk between being obvious and be suggestive...implied.
